CLARE VIVIER AT HOME: A COLLABORATION WITH WALLSHOPPE WALLPAPER

September 18, 2017

Digitally printed wallcoverings are getting chic, thanks to the new Clare V. x WS collaboration. Wallshoppe, if you aren't familiar, is an LA-based digitally printed wallpaper line that debuted a fun collection by my friend Nathan Turner, who in turn brought Clare Vivier into the fold.  As you probably know from my Instagram feed (@stylebeatblog) the LA- based handbag and accessories designer Clare Vivier is a favorite of mine. Her fresh, casual basics designs have clean lines, often in a crisp red white and blue color palette.  She has a distinctly American point of view with a Francophile's touch. This is a busy fall for Clare, she opened a San Francisco store and did a jacket collaboration with fashion stylist Marlien Rentmeester of Le Catch.

Wallshoppe's wallpapers are printed on eco friendly non-toxic paper with a smooth matte finish that is scratch resistant. Made to order, you can choose from wallpaper or removable panels with adhesive backing, making it a great choice for renters and kids rooms. This new collection has a great energy to it, and every pattern and vivid color way knocks it out of the park.

For the sporty, Tennis Balls is the way to go. Different color combinations abstract the ball, turning it into more of an unidentifiable object, which is graphic and fun.

A well loves Sardine print known to Clare V fans makes its way onto the wall. It's cheeky and spirited.

ARTIST DISCOVERY: GET TO KNOW THE ART OF WENDY BRIGGS POWELL

April 7, 2017

Uncovering wonderful talent is one of the great things about Instagram. I discovered artist Wendy Briggs Powell courtesy of Instagram, and I am so glad I did. Her abstract paintings are beautiful and uplifting. Using a dip dye process with watercolor she calls "watermarks", Powell creates beautiful abstract waterprint pieces with color fields by submerging sheets of paper into a color bath. She obtained a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Vermont College of Fine Arts, where she honed this unique process. There is something about them that reminds me of Rothko's color field paintings, but with a looser style. She works with a durable paper that takes the color well, and she explained, "I work with Crane's lettra paper. It is super thick and I can let it soak and saturate for hours, even days, without it losing too much structure." The paintings measure 26" x 20" or 20" x 26" and make a graphic impact yet have a softness to them. "I work with large containers of dyed water so they are not really watercolors in the traditional sense! It's an unpredictable process and that's one of the things I really like about it," Powell says. Water and form play a big part in her work, as do fluidity and embracing the unexpected.

ANTHROPOLOGIE x LUKE EDWARD HALL, THE SKETCHED SAFARI COLLECTION

January 25, 2017

It all started with pillows. My favorite interior designer/artist/fashion illustrator of the moment, Luke Edward Hall first put urns, classical busts and snakes on embroidered pillows and they were an instant hit. His fresh colors and whimsical animal illustrations brought a new take and something unexpected. I first took notice of Hall's unique perspective in 2014, (you can read my profile here) when he was working with British designer and classical architect, Ben Pentreath. His talents were supported by fellow color and classical design enthusiast, Bridie Hall, Pentreath's partner in the most exciting design shop in London, Pentreath and Hall. It has been amazing to see Hall's illustrations in artwork, on plates, in Burberry ad campaigns and now, they are available in a collection for Anthropologie. Catch his fantastical animal safari of elephants, tigers and flamingos on upholstered chairs, lampshades, wallpaper, and soon, framed prints, with a signature dose of British whimsy and style.

HONE YOUR DESIGN EYE AT THE WINTER ANTIQUE SHOW AND LEARN FROM THE BEST

January 19, 2017

January in New York brings one of the most esteemed art, antiques and design fairs, The Winter Antique Show, celebrating its 63rd year. Benefitting the East Side House Settlement, the show opens it's (massive) Park Avenue Armory doors on the 19th of January with its Opening Night Party. Honorary Design Chairs Jamie Drake, Caleb Anderson, Celerie Kemble, and Miles Redd will add to the sparkle. Attended by the leading lights of the design world, it's not unusual to spot an interior designer with a client, doing some shopping to get dibs on beautiful museum-quality pieces. The Young Collectors Night party on the 26th is when interior designers and design aficionados gather to see the wide variety of design styles represented, see friends and toast a new year. The design committee is always a great roster of interior design talent that is a part of the vibrant New York design community. The contents of the booths, however, is shifting in a sign of the times.  In the past the show has featured Americana and Folk Art and is modifying the varied assortment to represent the tastes of the times, including exhibitors that show a more modern assortment, leaning towards 20th century designs. Yet devoted classicists and traditionalists can expect to find a wide range of highly collectable vetted 18th and 19th Century English, European, and Asian antiques and decorative arts, and probably always will. From garden statuary to jewelry, you are sure to see the best of the best from the 70 dealers gathered under one roof. Go to learn, develop your eye and connect with the design community, you will be glad you did. History has a way of enchanting and amazing us, and every piece has its own unique story.  Here are some of the spectacular pieces I am excited to see in person, and you can too since the show runs till January 29th, 2017.

A cantilever back Samuel Marx chair from Liz O'Brien, a constant favorite of mine. Her booth is always a magical experience of discovery. Find her at booth 44.

Maison Gerard always wows with their fully realized room installations. This year will include this contemporary Stephane Parmentier table, at booth 4.

This 18th Century Italian Walnut Folding Chair from Cove Landing has clean lines and a sculptural quality that make it a standout piece. See it at booth 25
