AFTER 30 YEARS OF GARDENING GREATNESS SMITH AND HAWKEN CLOSING

Where will gardener's go to make their garden grow? Smith and Hawken just announced that they are closing. Their website is already down and the retail stores, all 56 of them, will be liquidating over the next few months. Owner Scotts Miracle-Gro tried selling the brand, to no avail.

It takes some searching, but you may be able to hunt and gather to fill the void:

A place to find gardening delights as good would have to be Alta Tingle's Berkeley treasure since 1985, The Gardener. With stores throughout California and a great website, The Gardener sources beautiful objects and tools from around the globe.

The New York Botanical Garden Shop in the Garden is a really special shop filled with floral related jewelry, books, planters and more. Their website shows things beautifully, but it is hard to beat the experience of going there.

If you find yourself in Pennsylvania, Terrain at Styler's of Glen Mills is worth a trip. They offer landscaping services, a garden center, have a shop and adorable cafe. Anthropologie is behind Styers, namely John Kinsella, who has made this place a gem.
